Ten Interesting Things About Human Behavior is a short, lighthearted look at 10 things human beings do, why we do them, and their significance in our everyday lives. How do we resolve psychological conflict that occurs when our behavior violates our attitudes? Why are we so quick to blame others for their behavior while offering excuses for our own? What should we make of the talking heads on cable TV who argue about the cause of TV violence on children's behavior - whose explanation is correct? Why are reality TV shows, some of which portray contestants as pathetic and dysfunctional, so popular?
Questions like these usually provoke different answers from different people, each of whom may attribute his or her answers to "common sense." One person argues that "of course children mimic violence they see on TV - my kids do" while another attributes it to "poor parenting - because my kids don't." Which is it, and why?
Research psychologists try to answer these questions as best we can. This book is a brief look at the answers to 10 aspects of human behavior - answers derived from controlled behavioral research that is designed to test various theories about behavior. Certainly, there is more to human behavior than the 10 things I chose for this short book. And there are hundreds of primary sources and research reports that describe the research findings in more depth. They're out there if you'd like to read more.
But for those who are new to the field of Experimental Psychology, 10 Things may pique your interest in learning more about the subject. And for those "armchair psychologists" out there who'd like a quick read about the most fascinating creatures on the planet - human beings - I think you'll like it, too.

Ten Interesting Things About Human Behavior edition by Suzanne Davis Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Reads like a magazine or blog article. One thing I didn't like was the abrupt way the author ended the book. On behavior #10, titled "Our Brains Turn Off Our Behavior When We Dream, the author gave one example in this section about why we sleepwalk and then ended it with these four sentences..."What good is knowing this?" Well, this one is just plain fascinating. Isn't that enough? "You can wow your family and friends with your knowledge about sleep and its relation to behavior. Really? With just that one example about sleep paralysis, which I think is pretty common knowledge? I turned the page looking for more and that was it. Kind of like a miss-step off a curb you don't expect.
For a quick read, this is a highly informative book that serves as a conduit between your perception of someone's behavior and that person's reasoning behind it. Understanding why people behave the way they do is always an uphill battle, but the 10 chapters here help in painting a better portrait of the various idiosyncrasies we encounter on a daily basis. I for one found the chapter on people's rude behavior during airline travel to be fascinating.
Thanks for sharing your short book with us.
It was a lot if fun to read. Most parts of the book left me wanting more, which is a really good feature, and I believe one intent of the author...to make me think and perhaps even read more elsewhere.
The examples with each chapter are mostly lighthearted and some just comical, because just about all of us have seen or experienced them for ourselves. The insights have just enough expertise lingo, without protracting into dissertations leaving a numb mind.
Well worth your time. And you might just understand that annoying person in your life better! They'll still be annoying, though.
Suzanne L. Davis has compiled a list of some interesting things that are just plain interesting and thought provoking. It is a "short and lighthearted" read just as promised in the introduction. For those with a deeper interest in the subject matter references are provided at the end of the book. If nothing else this little book should help us all with our interactions with others and that's a very good thing. I enjoyed the book. I often wonder if books like this actually reach the people who could benefit from them the most (like those rude airline passengers mentioned) but that I imagine would be the subject of another book. All in all a quick, light and enjoyable read on some of my favorite topics.
I'm a writer so I got this to better understand what drives people and did find some interesting info. It's a short read which for me was a good thing. I hate books that go on and on about info you don't really need and pepper in here and there what you do need. This book got straight to the point with no fluff. I really enjoyed chapter 2 Human beings can be inconsistent and I may use that idea in a future story.
Dr. Davis has a breezy manner in which she handles those sometimes annoying and tough human behaviors issues to give the reader a chance at understanding, rather than dealing with the anxiety of it all first. She must have experience with this, as it is telling in her running personalized commentary, but her advise is light and comical. Although she comes off as a bit of a behaviorist, she humanizes it through anecdotes. She also gets across key psychological concepts such as the normal curve, variance, cognitive dissonance, dreaming, and perceptual fields using stories in common language. She should consider expanding and fleshing out some of the material. Or turn it into a stand-up act. Folks would learn psychology while laughing! She has a good conversational style for presenting and does not hold herself above sniping at commonly annoying personality styles, which is interesting for someone trained in objectivity. Overall rating refreshing – Dr. Davis is a writer that I would not mind sitting down with and chatting.
This was an enjoyable read--kind of a common-sense approach to psychology without getting too technical. Each behavior the author explores ends with a section asking, "What good is it to know this?" and giving some practical applications for thinking about human behavior this way. One reviewer suggested that it reads more like a blog post or online article, and I would agree with that, but that doesn't make it less interesting or informative--it really just makes it easy to read and understand. I would also have liked it to be longer, and maybe a little meatier in terms of research and examples, but it's hard to strike the balance between meatier and accessible, and I think the author did a good job.
